1st year of Officekami

One year before, I said Hello World.

Within this one year, Officekami has reviewed 120 Locations and 15 articles. Err the articles is a bit few.

And to date, @Nazroll from Redboot Solutions has elevated the presence of Officekami by hacking it and WIN FOR IT WEI! during Yahoo OpenHack Southeast Asia, and even did a mobile test version for Officekami site.

And day by day, me myself assisting in suggesting fellow mobile warriors finding nearby mobileoffice via @officekami twitter. Even it’s not much of a followers, just 77, but I’m intrigued and amazed at the reception. It even featured at InfoMalaya and Amanz.my, just few tech blogs here.

Imagine you got a phone call asking where to work, that’s how crazy, well at least for me.

and thanks to bunch of mobile warriors for joining first co-working event in conjunction with Earth Hour,  thanks to our sponsor of that day, San Francisco Coffee.

I’ve given talks to TEDxMMU on how Mobileoffice could save the world, and at BarcampKL too. No available slides uploaded, sooner seriously.

And I must thank all for the support. But I would not stop here.

I will propose a Bill of Telecommuting in Malaysia. Okay at this point you should laugh.

Officekami is a Weddingkami community project, where we share our corporate culture with others, by doing work mobile. There’s no business activity behind Officekami, and the value of Officekami is the info that will help the community.

Mobile Office for the win

Sincerely, Ikhwan Nazri

P/S: CUT THE CRAP WHY THIS POST SOUNDS SO EMO LOL!!  (maybe coz of that last line sincerely hahaha) Okay on the shorter note, I’ll will definitely bring Officekami more alive and kicking in the 2nd year. Chale!

Officekami celebrating Earth Hour

Hello all mobilewarriors! Aha. In less than a week we’ll be celebrating Earth Hour that will be held on the last Saturday of March annually. This Saturday, see all local house turning off their lights for an hour for a change. And since it falls on Saturday, which is non-working day, it is not that beneficial for us, who are working so I was thinking if I could pull an Officekami day, a day where most of mobilewarriors going out, co-working at mobileoffices to save their Office electric.

Now what are the benefit of Officekami day ?

  • Save your electricity
  • Meet other Mobilewarriors from other profession
  • To celebrate Earth Hour, a day before.

Last year during BarcampKL, I’ve stated this in my Mobileoffice presentation

Consider this
You and your department, 10 people, decided to go mobile on every Friday, or working at home
By deciding that, you’ll turn off all the electrical appliances in the office,
Wasn’t that earth day? kinda

What do you think? Read more please.

The Mobilewarriors Code

Last three days I’ve met Pat Teoh & Yati Amzah from Paper and Toast. They wanted to know more about Officekami and invited me for a tea. While discussing and bombing their minds with what Officekami/Mobileoffice is, Yati told me

“wow you even have a sort of code of conduct”

And the day before I’ve met them, I’ve twitted about that we/mobilewarriors should be assistive. In my mind, I have already planned some of the rules so i thought, it is the right time to spill it over, at least before I forget.

Behold, this is The MobileWarriors Code

====================================

One has to go out of their permanent office.

The most basic rule. If you do not go out from your office and if you do not doing your work at mobileoffices you are not mobile warriors. But when you step inside any of places that are not office doing your job, then you’ve become one Mobile warriors. So step out from your office (even it is home office), and become one of us, Mobilewarriors.

One has to be assistive and courtesy.

During your adventure as Mobilewarriors, one may met someone else who in dire need. If you’ve at your mobile office and you saw another seems-to-be mobilewarriors looking for plug, point them the plug that you knew. If you have plug extensions, then share it with them. If they’re looking at the plug and you’re battery already charged, give them the plug so they could charge too. If you’re mobile-office-ing at a fast food joint, make sure to occupy a single or two seater table. If you didn’t have a choice but to occupy 4 seater table, then make sure there still other seat for other customers to have their meals on. If the area become jampacked during lunch hour, leave the places and give area to others who really need it.

One has to spend at mobileoffices.

When you’re working at those mobileoffices, buy some food and drinks to support their business. You’re using their resources so it is unethical to just using their WiFi or electricity without paying a penny. Buy even just a cup of coffee to support them.

One has to be careful with their surroundings.

A mobilewarriors should be alert and aware with their surroundings. Never ever leave the laptop unattended. Our laptop is our most precious weapon in our line of job so how can you fight without your spear a.k.a laptop? Bring Kensington Lock or do your work with your friend in that case. Or ask friendly staff to guard over your laptop in case you’ve need to be away.

====================================

That is, 4 code of conduct to become one of us, Mobile Warriors. Hope you can use it as a guideline before calling yourself a Mobile warriors :)

Who needs who for the win?

Peace be upon you mobile warriors. Now, for Officekami Friday Sermon ( much alike Islamic Friday Prayer, before they pray, have to listen to sermon ) I’m going to talk about…. Who needs who ?

Actually regarding this topic, I’ve been thinking about it weeks ago. Just didn’t have time to wrote about it. Then today, comes a wake up call for me.

If you didn’t understand malay, Noktahhitam, ranting about Web Dev problem in Malaysia, late payments.

I do agree with him.

From my perspective, web industry is an underpaid industry. Now I don’t want to talk about big shot agency who house 20++ developers that may range from Information Architects or Bug Tester, or just CSS designer or copywriter. These big shot agency usually doesn’t face this problem because they have high capitals and high turn overs. They may only deal with industry or brands.

Etika Pekerjaan

Assalamualaikum dan Salam Sejahtera. Anda bersama ruang tazkirah Officekami (cewah) Tazkirah == short sermon in arabic.

Rasulullah S.A.W siap pergi perang masa bulan puasa dahulu ditengah-tengah gurun, bukan Gurun kat Kedah.

Jackets and blazers, they’re your mantles.

Talk about jackets and blazers while listening to Cake – “Short Skirt & Long Jacket” please.

Jackets & blazers play important role to my personalities and also appearance. On daily basis I only wear T-Shirts and occasionally, slippers. Even me in my college days only wear slippers to lecture halls. Comfy, it is. However realizing that if I’m lucky on that day, I may have to attend some meetings and therefore, I bring jackets. Wearing jackets for meeting, even with T-Shirt inside help raised my personalities and seriousness, where I didn’t have it at all time LOL.

But apart from carrying your jackets to swap your personalities easily, they can become a tool inside your mobileoffice too

1. This is your table!

Starbucks Borders, Gardens Midvalley

Starbucks Borders, Gardens Midvalley

Before I order the drinks what not, I will walks and survey the area to seek for the things I need such as plugs, the level of the char and desk and also the view. After finding my spot, I’ll mark it with my Rubbermaid Chug Bottle and also, yes, my jacket. Putting bottle just isn’t enough and i’m still paranoid, by not leaving the laptop unattended. So jackets is pretty revealing and also, it’s big enough indicators that this is SPARTA your table :p

2. Your company when it’s raining and cold.

Yup I bring jackets if it’s raining and it will surely get cold inside this mobile office. much alike the normal offices.

3. A sheet of comfy on top of hard wooden chair.

Sometimes, you have to sit on the hard wooden chair that can’t provide comfort to your back and butt. What I’ve did is I just fold my jacket and then put behind me as my back support.

//==

So guys, don’t forget to carry your jackets too. Rise and shine Mobile Warriors!
