Officekami Warriors List

Thanks for those who’ve added to the list. Here below are the list of Mobile Warriors who shared their location and could be your mobile-office-mate. Before I reveal the list, let’s read, the tenth commandments of Mobile-Office-mates

  1. You must realize it is still working. Avoid chatting nonsense for long hours, unless both of you guys agree to chit-chatting and lepak-ing.
  2. The kind of chit-chat that is allowed, is the kind that is short and sweet and work related. Like “hey check out this SmashingMagazine review” or “hey it’s raining”. Or maybe “hey what’s wrong with my CSS” meh!
  3. Twit/email the person that you want to co-working with beforehand. Ask if they’re available and like to co-working with you. This is to avoid any unnecessary things in example you came and the other warriors was meeting their clients at that time.
  4. And for the person who get the co-working request from others, please do fast background check. Only allow people you comfortable co-working with, working with you.
  5. So it is best to plan a day or two day ahead to co-work together.
  6. If it’s possible, car-pooling to the officekami location. Save the earth la wei!
  7. Still to keep your personal belongings secured. Never ever to trust a new friend.
  8. And if both of you have a free time, do a technology transfer. Learn something new from other else.
  9. All the rule above, up to you to follow or not. There’s no penalty nor summons. It’s just common sense.
  10. Lastly, I, and Officekami, if it’s defined as an entity, will not be held responsible for any misuse of the list. The names and twitter ID appear on the list with the consent of the warriors. Should the warriors suddenly felt it’s unsafe to reveal their daily or weekly location, mail me ikhwandotnazriatflavertdotcom to remove your list. Of course, only you geeks can read my email previously.

So here below, are the list of Mobile Warriors.

If you didn’t understand malay, Noktahhitam, ranting about Web Dev problem in Malaysia, late payments.

I do agree with him.

From my perspective, web industry is an underpaid industry. Now I don’t want to talk about big shot agency who house 20++ developers that may range from Information Architects or Bug Tester, or just CSS designer or copywriter. These big shot agency usually doesn’t face this problem because they have high capitals and high turn overs. They may only deal with industry or brands.

Jackets and blazers, they’re your mantles.

Talk about jackets and blazers while listening to Cake – “Short Skirt & Long Jacket” please.

Jackets & blazers play important role to my personalities and also appearance. On daily basis I only wear T-Shirts and occasionally, slippers. Even me in my college days only wear slippers to lecture halls. Comfy, it is. However realizing that if I’m lucky on that day, I may have to attend some meetings and therefore, I bring jackets. Wearing jackets for meeting, even with T-Shirt inside help raised my personalities and seriousness, where I didn’t have it at all time LOL.

But apart from carrying your jackets to swap your personalities easily, they can become a tool inside your mobileoffice too

1. This is your table!

Starbucks Borders, Gardens Midvalley

Before I order the drinks what not, I will walks and survey the area to seek for the things I need such as plugs, the level of the char and desk and also the view. After finding my spot, I’ll mark it with my Rubbermaid Chug Bottle and also, yes, my jacket. Putting bottle just isn’t enough and i’m still paranoid, by not leaving the laptop unattended. So jackets is pretty revealing and also, it’s big enough indicators that this is SPARTA your table :p

2. Your company when it’s raining and cold.

Yup I bring jackets if it’s raining and it will surely get cold inside this mobile office. much alike the normal offices.

3. A sheet of comfy on top of hard wooden chair.

Sometimes, you have to sit on the hard wooden chair that can’t provide comfort to your back and butt. What I’ve did is I just fold my jacket and then put behind me as my back support.

//==

So guys, don’t forget to carry your jackets too. Rise and shine Mobile Warriors!

WTH is Mobile Office?

If you have little time to know about mobile office, and don’t want to kill your office time now, then watch my not-so-lightning talks for about ten minutes during BarCamp KL  April 2009

Else if you lose your motivation and want to read, then here’s my slideshow during the same event.

I think both of the things above explain it all about Mobile Office / Office Kami

Idea on a Tissue

Yesterday after going for workshop to have Anubis’s scheduled maintenance ( Engine Oil + Gear Oil ), went to JCo Damansara Utama waiting for meeting with my client. Still have 3 hours before it so I decide to ‘mobile office’ at JCo Giant Damansara Utama.

Guess what I found? JCo print out their tissue to be useful ones – as a note.

This is one of the practice that my previous lecturer always said about it.

Living Life as Fulltime Freelancer

Fulltime freelancer is a person who do freelance job on fulltime basis. it doesnt mean that they didnt have a job, but it’s they do their job of what their best at. today marks the 6 month i become a fulltime freelancer from september 2007.  Before that i was just a part-time freelancer swapping jobs with studies for at least 3 years. Recently in forum lowyat.net, a fellow forumer, clivengu, asking about life becoming fulltime freelance. Well here i share with you what i wrote.

//— this is the same post inside lowyat.net, Art n Design board.

ya im now a fulltime freelance in

Project Manager.
Flash Interactives, Motion, Application, Mobile Content, Animation, courseware.
Website Design, Web development.

About life. ya life now is interesting. Indeed very interesting. You do what you love and furthermore there’s no time constraint in your life. But if there’s no discipline in life also it would be a terrible mess tongue.gif The earning in depends on how you view it. you become freelance so that you can choose what you want to do. if the payment small and not worth your time so leave it. don’t do job that is cheap and time consuming. because other offer might will just come. (or not.. that you have to think ). however i always let myself open a bit. if that project is seem beneficial for the long run, maybe take it. depends. if let say have a family behind and we have to give them food and shelter, this thing come first.

But bare in mind, if you think that freelance is to work 24/7,canceling a date with your girlfriend, missing reunion with your family, you better work at any company. you get a monthly salary. work from 9-5, can get cozy and perfect sleep at night and spend time with the one you love.It saves a lot of hassle over piling jobs over the desk. Me myself set the rule for me that i only work during office hour. If only necessary chasing the deadline than i have to stay up but i try to make that not a habit. Prospect and social. I don’t think i have any problem with it. well about prospect, have to always keep promoting and updating ourselves with new technologies, job offerings and so on so we’ll never leave behind. and about social, it’s one of the important part because when people don’t know you it’s hard to get any job offerings. I join networking session, designer/programmer gathering, PSP gathering and also enjoying myself involving in voluntary activities. sometimes we just need to turn off the computer and doing something humane.

I believe even freelance animator ( that always viewed like a living zombie doing job 24/7) can enjoy this kind of life, as long as we have discipline. that is to complete project in time. The urge to finish the project in time and to have free time doing what we love. [ in addition, unfortunately not in malaysia. the animator have to know all those sort of things. rendering, storyboarding. that's how redundant the work here. the person who complete the job, have to complete other person job. it's okay if it still in the same league. but what can you expect from a art director to do programming/rendering?? its not happen only in multimedia field, but also other fields. - this one i just add ]

but one thing, im not very sure how are the others. people view me like i don’t have a job. they define job as working in a company, in a office, with a schedule. how about other fulltime freelancers? are you facing the same situation like me?

One thing that should bare in freelancer mind. you have to manage yourself. because you dont have EPF/SOCSO for your old days so have to save a lot. there may be a situation where there’s no job for one month. so have to prepare the money. there maybe when the deposit money for the proposed project is not enough so you may had to use a bit of your money before hand. as the above stated, you have to manage yourself all the time. either search for client or prepare an umbrella for the rain that is coming.

All i can say, freelancing is not a cool and safe thing to do, if you didnt get prepared. If you have the skill, self-management and discipline, then you’re good to fly soar above the sky

well that’s my post.  but don’t get me wrong. there’s no wrong working with people. different people have different issues, matters and constraint. just my word of advise if you think to quit to become fulltime freelance, be prepared, be very extremely prepared.

I’m still not a millionaire or billionaire, for my aim is to be success and now im heading there.  So i hope this just a part of my experience will be beneficial for you guys, viewers of what i see everyday.
